1001 web and tech

Hi, I just started dabbling in web design, only a few weeks and so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm also looking into web design courses and think I've found a masters degree at a university that includes web design and much much more. Just wondering whether a university degree is really necessary to get into the industry or how I'd even go about getting into it. I have also found a course that's more strictly speaking just web design and wonder if that will be enough. It would be a rather late career change for me too but I just don't know any web designers and would love to just get a better understanding of the whole industry from someone who will really tell it like it is.
